The History of Our Property & Business
Our Story
We are a small, family owned business, grown from our love for gardening and being in service to the community.
Our Hillside location has expanded rapidly to meet our customer's needs. We offer a large selection of outdoor flowers, decor and gifting items combined with personal service from a very knowledgeable staff.
We cannot thank you, our customers, enough, for visiting Luurs Garden Center over the years! May your own garden become a cherished part of your life just as ours has!
Jim, Carol & Patrick Luurs
1830-1840: Homesteaded by George H. Darmstadt & wife, Agnes Lindberger (German Immigrants) George & his brother farmed what was originally 70 acres on adjacent parcels of this property.
As their family grew to 5 children, they moved into this new & much larger farmhouse.
Items the Darmstadt Family had on this property over the years included: 2 good workhorses, 3 cows, fresh & coming in, 2 cider presses,a double seated carriage, a bob sleigh & a McCormick mower.
The original farm cabin (brown building in right side of this photo) remained on the property into the 1960's.
The Fendt- Anderson Family purchased the property post 1920's.
In 1980, The Luurs Family purchased a small grocery store in Berkeley, Il on Taft Ave. Next to this property, in Spring 1983, the original Luurs Garden & FLower Shoppe opened as a seasonal business.
Thanks to our customers and community support, a little more than 6yrs later, the current hilltop property was purchased to relocate the business on the corner of Butterfield & Taft Ave!
Luurs Garden & Flower Shoppe opened for business offering a full range of annuals, perennials, nursery stock, outdoor garden needs & decor and full range of gift items in a Gift Shoppe built where the original cabin house once stood!
